Hello :)
My name is Emily Denton and I am a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, Yoga Instructor specializing in geriatric fitness, and a Holistic Health Coach. I came to all of this work in my mid 20s looking for more holistic ways of healing and specifically to find tools to regulate stress and anxiety.
Somagicks is a made up word (obviously) that is a mash up of two words. Soma (the body) + Magicks (intentional change, ritual practices). My goal is to share with you the somatic practices that helped me tap into my body’s own wisdom and magic. The benefits are endless, but they start with feeling good and living with more confidence. I love this work, it is so rewarding.Â
Some things of note about me are that I founded “Poseurs” a donation based yoga community out of Seattle Washington in 2014 and ran it full time until 2021 when I moved to Portland Oregon. Poseurs was also a yoga fanzine, written largely by the community of students and ran 47 issues.
During that time I also co-founded a yoga teacher training program through the Yoga Alliance, “Practice School of Magic” where we trained and graduated over 50 trauma informed yoga teachers, many of which are teaching today.
In 2020 I began my Somatic Experiencing practice and started Somagicks, a business and brand that could be home to my role as SEP, my “Shape Shifters” trauma informed yoga classes and Dragon Heart Fit Club, fitness for older adults.
I have a dog named Luci who I am obsessed with and I just love dogs in general. I play music and love to hike in my free time. In my next life I wanna be a tree in a forest.
Thank you for being here and exploring this work. Below are a list of my teachers, of which there are actually too many to name. I love learning and am almost always in a workshop or some kind of continuing education. My students are some of my best teachers. Nature is a teacher. But for the reference there is a list and you can also check out their offerings if you are an eternal student like me.Â

What is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing (SE™) is a body-oriented therapeutic model applied in multiple professions and professional settings such as psychotherapy, medicine, coaching, teaching, physical therapy and body work—for healing trauma and other stress disorders. It is based on a multidisciplinary intersection of physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics and has been clinically applied for more than four decades. It is the life’s work of Dr. Peter A. Levine.
SE supports regulation of the autonomic nervous system, which underlies every aspect of our physical, emotional, and psychological functioning. This is so important. Through the lens of the nervous system we have a framework and a map to assess where a person is “stuck” in the fight, flight or freeze survival responses and provides clinical tools to resolve these fixated physiological states.
Trauma can result due to a wide variety of stressors such as accidents, sexual or physical assault, emotional abuse, neglect, medical procedures, war, natural disasters, loss, birth trauma and cultural, institutional and intergenerational trauma. SE supports the understanding of and completion of self-protective motor responses in the body, which resolves and integrates stuck survival energy bound in the body. This is at its core the root cause of traumatic symptoms. SE accomplishes this by gently guiding clients to develop increasing tolerance bodily sensations and emotions and helps people understand their bodies response by working through a “body first” approach to healing.
